Food Distribution Program Off to Great Start
Pastor Ken Smith of Kingdom Builders Ministries in Bridgeport awaits his turn to pick up "Angel Food" at the Good News Christian Church in Wallingford. He lamented that he wasn't looking very much like a pastor as I snapped this photo. I beg to differ!!!
Angel Food is a great dollar stretching food program out of Monroe, Georgia. Once a month, a truck pulls up to the Wallingford drop site where the host churches pick up their pre-ordered allotments of food. It's a labor intensive endeavor, but well worth it. We all gathered for pick-up at 5:30 A.M. Saturday morning. It was very dark, very cold, and very wonderful! This thing is going to explode throughout the state. You could feel it in the crisp Fall morning air!
Pastor Jim Detweiller of Calvary Temple Church in North Haven is one of the New Haven 828 pastors who showed up for his church's allotment. He's excited about the outreach opportunity with Angel Food. As a rule, you don't want to get in the habit of "home delivery" of the groceries, but Pastor Jim was pleased to bring a box of food to one wheelchair bound woman who had placed an order.
Back at Church on the Rock (right), after our "Transportation Team" dropped off our allotment at the church, a team of volunteers prayefully prepared to start handing
out food between the hours of 8 and 9:30 A.M.
It's a one Saturday a month commitment. The food comes in and goes out all in the same day. There is no storage involved. It's a good thing all the way around! If you'd like to know more about the program, check out the COTR web page. If we get enough local intrerest and orders we won't have to run up to Wallingford to pick up our allotments. COTR would be a logical drop point for this part of the state.
